WE WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE AND INVITE YOU TO TAKE PART IN THE FIRST EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION OPUS 2019 ORGANIZED BY LIFE AND ART FOUNDATION

 

Who can apply?

The competition is dedicated to the musicians of all nationalities can take part up to the 30th years old playing the following instruments: piano, violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, tuba, percussion.

 

When can you apply?

1.11.2018 – 31.03.2019

 

How to apply?

In order to participate in the competition an instrumentalist needs to send a link with an audio-video recording (YouTube). The length of recording should be in accordance with the category a participant belongs to. More information in regulations here.

Geneva International Clarinet Competition

Presentation

The Geneva Clarinet Competition 2018 will be held from 3-14 November in Geneva, Switzerland. The competition is open to all clarinetists born after 8 November 1988, regardless of gender or nationality. Candidates  who  have  already  won a first Prize at one of the earlier Geneva Competitions are not allowed to enter for the same discipline again.

Ligeti – Quartetto n. 1 “Métamorphoses nocturnes”
Mendelssohn – Quartetto n. 6 in fa minore op. 80
Mozart – Quintetto per clarinetto e archi in la maggiore K 581

                      Sono i freschi vincitori del Borletti Buitoni Trust Award 2018, l’olandese Dudok Kwartet e la clarinettista belga Annelien Van Wauwe e insieme affrontano un tour europeo che li porterà a debuttare anche al Quartetto. Il pezzo più pregiato della serata è ovviamente il Quintetto con clarinetto di Mozart. Scritto nel penultimo anno di vita, pensato per il clarinettista amico (e finanziatore) Anton Stadler è contemporaneo dell’estremo Requiem, del quale condivide la serena dolcezza melodica e la forte vitalità armonica. Lo interpreta la clarinettista belga Annelien Van Wauwe, già allieva di Sabine Meyer e ora docente ad Anversa, ormai da un decennio solista assieme a grandi orchestre, a suo agio sia su strumenti antichi che moderni, su musiche del passato e del contemporaneo.
Ma ci sono cose preziose nella prima parte, affidata al solo Dudok Qwartet: il primo Quartetto del giovane Ligeti è di riconosciuta ispirazione bartókiana. Legato all’estremo Beethoven è il sesto e ultimo quartetto di Mendelssohn, dedicato alla memoria della sorella.

After a ravishing opening concert last month Wa Concert Series continues with its next musical offering Virtuosity & Beyond, this time with a program introducing works both new and virtually unknown which in performance expand our notions of what exactly virtuosity is.

Wright State University Reeds Festival

Dayton, Ohio

The Wright State University Reeds Festival is an event that brings together clarinet, bassoon, and oboe players from throughout Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The festival is a full day of new ideas and exchanges of knowledge geared towards the needs and interests of high school students, private studio teachers, and amateur double reed players. The day will include:

Workshop Presenters

John Kurokawa

John KurokawaJohn Kurokawa is the Instructor of Clarinet at Wright State University. In addition to teaching applied clarinet, he teaches courses in woodwind chamber music, woodwind pedagogy, and music education. He performs in the resident faculty wind quintet, the Wright Winds, and the WSU Chamber Orchestra. His performances have been praised for their “...warmth, communication, and easy virtuosity” (Cincinnati Enquirer) and “truly flawless technique and intonation...a tone as smooth as silk and velvet.” (Kettering-Oakwood Times). He has presented clinics and performed at institutions across the midwest, including the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Penn State University, James Madison University, Viginia Commonwealth University, Bowling Green State University, the University of Evansville, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and many others, as well as being a frequent clinician with high schools and youth orchestras in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas.

Kurokawa currently performs as Principal Clarinetist of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist with both ensembles, performing the works of Mozart, John Williams, Gerald Finzi, and John Adams. Aditional solo appearances include the WSU Chamber Orchestra and most recently, the Dayton Bach Society and the WSU Wind Symphony performing Michael Daugherty's Brooklyn Bridge for solo clarinet and wind ensemble. In the summer Kurokawa performs as Principal Clarinetist of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra's festival, 'Summermusik' and has also performed as Eb clarinetist and guest Principal Clarinetist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. An avid chamber musician, he gives educational concerts at schools all over the Miami Valley with the Dayton Phiharmonic Woodwind Quintet and is a founding member of the Prestige Clarinet Quartet, which has been a featured ensemble at the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, International Clarinet Association Clarinetfest, Ohio Music Education Association, and Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Kurokawa has performed on the International Double Reed Society Conference, published articles in the Triad, presented at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference, and in 2013, was one of twenty faculty members recognized by Wright State University for Excellence in Teaching General Education.

Kurokawa holds the B.M. in woodwind performance (specializing in clarinet, flute, and saxophone) from Bowling Green State University and the M.M. in clarinet performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. His teachers include Angelo Fortini, Edward Marks, and Ronald de Kant.

Clarinet Day for College and High School Students


Navy Band Clarinet Day, featuring a mix of performances, masterclasses and lectures geared toward high school- and college-aged musicians, will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kenmore Middle School in Arlington, Va. The guest artist at this year’s Navy Band Clarinet Day is Sean Osborn.


The U.S. Navy Band, based in Washington D.C., is the Navy's premier musical organization. Staffed with some of the finest musicians in the nation and performing nearly 1,700 times each year, the band represents Sailors deployed around the world and around the clock.

FAQs
Q: What should I bring to Furman Single Reed Day?

A: You should have your instrument, reeds, music (solo and all-state audition music),  a notebook for taking notes, a pencil or pen, and money for vendors. Lunch will be provided, but feel free to bring a light snack in case you get hungry.

Q: What is a master class?
A: A master class is a group session in which a teacher coaches a student. These usually involve a single student performer, but include feedback and advice for all in attendance. They are valuable ways to learn from one another and excellent opportunities to perform.

Q: What will the vendors be selling?
A: Reeds, music, accessories, mouthpieces. There will also be clarinets, saxophones and other equipment available for trial and purchase.

Q: Can we win doorprizes?
A: ​Yes!  Many doorprizes and free samples available

The 1st Vienna International Music Competition has been conceived to give young musicians the chance to perform at the legendary Musikverein venue in Vienna. Open to ALL instruments (PIANO - STRINGS - VOICE - WIND - CHAMBER MUSIC). 20.000€ in prizes: various recitals at Musikverein, cash prizes and many special awards.
The students only need to submit the links of their video recordings before the application deadline (20 November 2018). The selection is made via video recordings, so travel is not required to apply.
