Jean Johnson - Renowned Soloist and Chamber Music Artist in the United Kingdom

Biography

               American Clarinetist Jean Johnson is a busy international collaborator in chamber music and as such has performed in some of world's finest venues, notably the Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, the Palais des Beaux-Arts, and the Esplanade Singapore.  As a soloist, Ms. Johnson has been featured with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Symphony Orchestra (China), and in Scotland with concertos by John McLeod and Steve King.  As a chamber musician, Ms. Johnson has a regular duo with her husband, pianist Steven Osborne, and is a member of the critically acclaimed chamber ensemble, "Daniel's Beard" in Glasgow.  Notable chamber music festivals include Spannungen, BOZAR, Schwetzingen, Prussia Cove, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, St. Magnus Festival, West End Festival Glasgow, and has collaborated with artists around the world and groups including the Hebrides Ensemble, T'ang Quartet, and the Edinburgh Quartet.  She regularly performs recitals throughout the UK, America, and further afield. 

            Ms. Johnson began her career with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra both as Associate and Acting Principal. Now in the UK, she performs regularly with major British orchestras and as a guest Principal has worked with orchestras including Bergen Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Camerata Ireland, among others.  She remains a devoted educator and teaches at Scotland's premiere specialist music school, St. Mary's Music School in Edinburgh.  She has presented masterclasses around the world and maintains a private studio.  

           Jean Johnson was born in Orange, Massachusetts and was a student of Michael
Sussman at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  She went on to attend Indiana University as an Associate Instructor in Clarinet, studying with Eli Eban and Alfred Prinz.  As a Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival she studied with Theodore Oien.  

          Jean has recently released an album of Brahms and
Rózsa Clarinet Sonatas on the Avie label which has received rave reviews from The New York Times, Gramophone Magazine, Klassieke Zaken, among other publications.
