Richard King, horn
Saturday, May 13, 2017, 8pm
Seligman Performing Arts
Center
22305 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills, Michigan

After four decades of success the world
over, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio continues to dazzle audiences
and critics alike with its performances. Since making their debut at the
White House for President Carter's Inauguration in January 1977, pianist
Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson
have set the standard for performance of the piano trio literature,
consistently bringing technical mastery, expressive depth and magnetism
to the concert stage. The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio balances the
careers of three internationally-acclaimed soloists while making annual
appearances at many of the world's major concert halls, commissioning
spectacular new works, and maintaining an active recording agenda.
Celebrations of the Trio's 2016-17 40th Anniversary season include a
repeat of their White House program with a specially commissioned
opening work by Pulitzer Prize-winner Ellen Zwilich, complete Beethoven
cycles at Boston's Gardner Museum and The Kennedy Center in Washington
DC and much more.
For this program the Trio is joined by
two long-time principals of the Cleveland Orchestra, clarinetist
Franklin Cohen and French horn player Richard King.
Program:
Brahms wrote only five trios; on this
program we hear the middle of his three piano trios paired with his only
clarinet and only horn trios.
Brahms: Trio for Piano, Clarinet and
Cello in A minor Op 114
Brahms: Trio for Piano, Violin and French horn in
E-flat major
Brahms: Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello No.

Für das Festival soll noch

About this project
In
2008, the "Heimat und Keramik Museum" (Museum of local history and ceramics)
in Kandern discovered a box full of unidentified wind instruments and other
relics. They called me to identify these and I was astounded to recognize
two almost complete historic basset horns (from around 1830) as well as
parts of a clarinet d'amore and more. These are extremely rare and valuable
instruments and we two original festival organizers immediately started our
mission of getting the basset horns restored and made playable again. We
succeeded in this and organized Basset Horn Festivals with
participants from all over Europe, America and Japan. After the first
festival, the mayor of Kandern called to tell me that further clarinet
instruments had been discovered. These were two 5-keyed boxwood clarinets
from the early 19th century and two bass clarinets from around 1860.
All four instruments are completely extant down to the mouthpieces and even
one ligature and reed! For more information see:
http://bassetti-paletti.de/News.html
We need to get these instruments restored and made playable too! So it is
our goal to raise enough money to convince the city to finance the rest. We
have added another capable member to our organization team and we all work
in an honorary capacity. It's worth it just to be able to hear these
wonderful instruments!
Risks and challenges
We have considered the basic moral
issue of restoring and actually playing historic instruments. We have the
greatest respect for the surviving substance and wish to conserve it for
future generations. For this reason we strictly adhere to the rule that the
restored instruments are only to be played for maximal 10 minutes a day and
only in the period before concerts. They are not taken anywhere but Kandern.
So if you want to here them, come to the festival!
