BEYOND THE BATON – What Every Conductor Needs
to Know
By Diane Wittry
BATON BASICS - Communicating Music
Through Gestures
By Diane Wittry
Description
Seasoned
conductor Diane Wittry draws a comprehensive roadmap to a
successful career in Beyond the Baton. With first-hand
understanding of how the role of the conductor has changed
across the years, she expertly examines the new set of
duties--both on and off of the podium--that now fall upon the
shoulders of the music director.
From getting a job to fundraising and
educational outreach, Wittry's comprehensive tips and strategies
guide students and professional conductors alike through the
leadership and organizational skills necessary for success.
Numerous real-life examples illustrate vital skills for artistic
leadership such as programming subscription, pops, and
educational concerts; understanding the budget and the music
director's role in funding the artistic vision; and presenting
speeches, and radio and televised interviews. In informative
conversations with the author, successful conductors Leonard
Slatkin, Robert Spano, and JoAnn Falletta offer tips from
personal experience on how music directors can work successfully
with orchestras, and what their roles are with the board and the
community.
Reviews
"There is much more to a successful conducting
career than merely standing on the podium and making music.
Diane Wittry has provided a remarkably thorough and thoughtful
guide to this unique profession, one that will be of immense
value to every aspiring conductor who hopes to work and flourish
in American orchestras."
– Henry Fogel, President and
CEO, American Symphony Orchestra League
Description
Baton
Basics offers a unique approach to teaching conducting based
upon the concept of conveying weight, resistance, and energy in
order to communicate a better concept of musical sound to the
musicians. Featuring many detailed drawings and access to over
60 video examples on the companion website, Baton Basics guides
conductors away from simply marking beat patterns, and towards a
nuanced and phrased musicality that can be communicated to a
group of musicians. Baton Basics is a key foundational text for
the student and experienced conductor alike, and is a must read
for anyone interested in improving and expanding their
vocabulary of conducting gestures.
Reviews
"After her singularly successful exploration of what a modern
conductor needs to know about all aspects of professional life
in Beyond the Baton, Diane Wittry has written another essential
book. In this lucid, comprehensive study of conducting gesture
and technique, Wittry has managed to distill and clarify the
essence of the conductor's craft."
-Alan Gilbert,
Music Director, New York Philharmonic
"Diane Wittry's Baton Basics is an extraordinary addition to
the art of conducting pedagogy. With impressive clarity, she
dissects the physical science of gesture and motion, and she
tackles the less easily defined skills of leadership with
sensitivity and understanding. Diane has explored the
intricacies of our profession with great imagination and
insight."
-JoAnn Falletta,
Music Director and Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic and
the Virginia Symphony
